To give one's life to Christ, as the common Christian expression goes, is to turn over all rights to Jesus Christ. He becomes our Lord, our Master. Yet even before we believe or say anything or surrender anything to Christ, we already belong to God in Christ.

The universe itself is God's own creation, His domain. We should not think of God's "place" as being some kind of wispy, semi-transparent, spirit-only kind of sparkling place called heaven. God rules all things. Not an atom or molecule moves (not even a proton or neutron) without His knowledge and consent. And the Bible explains that everything God has done (and will do) in the universe — in all that exists on every kind of level — He does in and through the person of Jesus Christ. Nothing was ever created without Jesus being involved, and nothing exists to this very day except by His word and will.

In other words, our lives and bodies already belong to Jesus even before we acknowledge Him as Savior or Lord. All that we are, all that we see or hope for, everything about us belongs to Jesus Christ — even before we become Christian believers.

But the neat thing about being Christians surrendered to the Lord, is that we know Him and we can be consciously taught by Him, directed by Him, led by Him. This makes life better. The life that is wholly surrendered to Christ is a life worth living, a life with real meaning and purpose, a life that will accomplish good and meaningful things in this world. Our words, our decisions, our actions will count so much more when we follow the teaching and careful direction of the Lord Jesus.

Jesus knows all about what human life on earth is like. He has been here, been one of us. He was a child, a teen, a young man. He was misunderstood, mistreated, tempted in all the same ways we are, and yet He stayed on course, and He can keep us on course as well. He died for our sins, to open the doors of eternal life with God to everyone who believes. Jesus is worthy of our trust, our love, our devotion and obedience.

No one really owns themselves until they recognize the Lordship of Jesus Christ and surrender to do His good will. No one can control the future except God. We are wise then to give our present concerns, our very lives, and our future to the Lord Jesus to handle. He will take us through, leading the way, teaching us as we go.
