God knows we all need joy.  We need the joy of the Lord, which is our strength, as Nehemiah 8:10 declares.  Joy is not an option, when it comes right down to it.  We all need joy to see us through the sometimes very difficult days. 

God created a world filled with beauty, I believe, to help lift our spirits.  Even at night we have the stars and the moon to stir our hearts.  Who can look at turning leaves in autumn without drinking in the spectacular colors and beauty?  Winter has snow and ice creations.  We all love a sunny day, a green meadow filled with flowers, a flock of wild geese or a school of jumping fish.  From the oceans to the mountains, to lakes and trees and freshly plowed fields, there is beauty everywhere — even deep in the waters of the ocean where we seldom go.

God gives us joy.  The Lord Jesus takes our sorrows on Himself.  The Psalmist David writes continually about the joy that comes from the Lord.  "My cup runneth over," he says in Psalm 23.  David faced many dark times in his life, often in dangerous places and circumstances.  But God kept him.  The Lord not only protected David from physical harm, but he "restoreth my soul," as David also says in Psalm 23, and other places.  Our most perfect joy is found in Jesus Christ.

One passage makes all of this especially clear.  In Psalm 16, David writes, "You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm 16:11, NKJV)
