The ICHTHUS fish symbol (shown black background with image in violet and magenta) dates back to the very early years of Christian faith, and was especially used by believers during the decades of severe persecution by various religious and political authorities in the Roman empire.  The sign of the fish can still be found in ruins.  The Greek word for fish was used as an acronym, each letter representing a word used to describe Christ: JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S SON, SAVIOR.
