There is nothing in the world quite like family. Only the Lord Jesus can make a family truly functional, I think, even when all the individual members really want things to work. The wonderful thing about family, is that all the members belong, even if some were not born by way of the same flesh and blood. Families are built by love, and love is what maintains any family even in the best of times. In the worst of times, love and forgiveness are the only hope.

God gives us families in order to teach us lessons of love and grace. If we are willing to learn how to think and act in love and kindness toward all the members of our family, we will find that we can also tolerate and better appreciate all the other people that will ever come into our lives.

No one is perfect in any family. And that means that no family is perfect. Each person in the family is a human being with strengths, weaknesses, areas of amazing wisdom, and other areas of astonishing silliness. And all the members begin with ignorance. This does not mean that we cannot learn many or all the lessons of love and understanding, as well as forgiveness and kindness, in the relationships we share with other members. As we do, we will be better prepared to face a world that is also anything but perfect.
